The food shelf is one way that we as a church get to express the beautiful compassion of Jesus to those in the Twin Ports area by feeding the hungry. We get the chance to not only hand out food and clothing, but help our guests in the food shelf experience the love and radical welcome of Jesus when they walk through the door. And, we have a blast doing it! Our food shelf is open to anyone in the Twin Ports area that has a need. Guests receive a week’s worth of food that they get to pick out themselves, and can also pick out clothes from our clothing closet at their visit. Our volunteers get the opportunity to love people from all different backgrounds as we serve our guests and point them towards the hope that is in Jesus by helping to meet their practical needs. We exist to build bridges of friendship and allow Jesus to walk across them.
The food shelf is open Tuesday evenings from 6pm – 8pm and Saturday mornings from 9:30am -11:30am. We ask volunteers to come 30 minutes before we open so we have time to set up, get to know each other, pray together, and also make sure everyone is trained into a role and feels comfortable. There are various roles to volunteer in, such as: intake (our check-in process), meat distribution (setting out different meat items and helping guests find what they need), personal shoppers (taking guests/households through the food shelf and helping them pick up their items, package them, and chat and pray with them if they’d like), check out (weighing and recording what we give away), carry out (just like it sounds, bringing groceries out to people’s cars), and prayer & connection team members (hanging out with them in the waiting room, praying as needs come up, and playing games and keeping people company while they wait). We would love to have you join us on a Tuesday at 5:30-8:30pm or a Saturday at 9:00am-12:30pm. Email us at [email protected] or call 218-525-3462 to set up a time to come and check it out! If you enjoy it, you’ll have the opportunity after you try it out to join a team to serve monthly, weekly, on-call, or somewhere in between.
Ways to serve: Intake (which requires computer skills), hospitality, personal shopper, prayer team, stocking, weighing, meat counter, and carry out, all of which happen on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Also, on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of every month, we have a food delivery from Second Harvest that requires a team of people to help unload.
